A typical season for Missouri High School Rodeo (MHSR) begins around Labor Day and culminates
with the State Finals in late June. Throughout the year, an estimated 120 cowboys and cowgirls will
compete in approximately 20 rodeos in 10 different locations.  These cowboys and cowgirls are all
members of Missouri High School Rodeo, as well as our parent organization, the National High
School Rodeo Association. Any student in grades 9-12 (even home-schoolers) are eligible to join.
Unlike traditional high school sports, MHSR contestants compete as individuals.  You do not need to
form a high school team or club to compete.

MHSR is not sanctioned by the MSHSA and receives no funding from the state or individual school
districts. No tax dollars go to support these athletes.  Students who wish to participate are fully
responsible for all their expenses.

For the 2010-11 season, association dues are $174.00.  The bulk of that money goes toward
insurance, as well as membership in the National organization.  Entry fees typically run $55 per event
per weekend.  That means for $55, you compete twice in your chosen event.  In addition, each
contestant is required to raise $300 in sponsorship money.  This sponsorship money is divided into
$150 fall 1st rodeo and $150 spring 1st rodeo.  Historically, the MHSR has printed calendars, which
sell for $20 each.  In addition to featuring the previous year’s winners, national teams, and other rodeo
photographs, the calendars include a raffle ticket, giving each purchaser numerous chances to win
money. If students sell 15 calendars, they have successfully raised their $300.  In addition to selling
calendars, many students approach local merchants for cash donations.  Either method of raising the
$300 is acceptable.

All participants must be students in good standing and must show respect for all animals at all times.
Students must be passing at least 70% of their subject areas and grade card records are maintained
throughout the season by the State Secretary.  Students are required to wear assigned back numbers
at all times, except while swimming, bathing, or sleeping.  They wear official dress (cowboy hat, long-
sleeved collared shirts, jeans, and boots) while in the arena area, whether they are competing or not.
Every competition begins with the national anthem and a word of prayer.  These students are hard-
working, respectful, competitive Americans who make many sacrifices in order to rodeo and promote
our Western heritage.

Because there are two rodeos per weekend, students and their families typically drive many hours
together and camp at the rodeo site.  Consequently, this sport has a great amount of parental
involvement and support.  It is safe to say that there are few high school students who spend as much
time with their parents as the MHSR contestants. Further, a great number of these students receive
scholarships throughout the Midwest and West to rodeo at the collegiate level.  In fact, one third of the
2003 graduating MHSR seniors were awarded some level of college rodeo scholarship money, many
receiving full-ride scholarships.
